The Delhi’s Rohini Court yesterday granted interim bail to olympic wrestler Sushil Kumar, the main suspect in the murder of Sagar Dhankar. Sushil Kumar has been granted four days’ interim bail to attend to his father’s final rites.
On humanitarian grounds, the court granted Sushil Kumar interim bail for an amount of Rs 1 lakh with two sureties in the same amount. Sushil Kumar has been imprisoned since June 2, 2021.
The court, while granting bail, stated that, given the fact that the accused’s father died yesterday and his last rites are to be performed today, the accused may be granted interim bail only on personal bond from March 6 to March 9.
Sushil Kumar and others are accused of assaulting former junior national wrestling champion Dhankar, a Rohtak resident, and his friends on May 4, 2021, in the parking lot of the city’s Chhatrasal Stadium over an alleged property dispute. He had been on the run for over a fortnight.
The deceased wrestler previously resided in a Model Town flat owned by Sushil Kumar, according to the police. The two wrestlers were involved in a rent dispute, which turned fatal after Dhankar abused Kumar.
According to the post-mortem report, Dhankar died as a result of his injuries, which were caused by a blunt object impact.
