St.Stephen’s Challenges Order Granting Admission To 7 Students As Per DU’s Allocation Policy

St. Stephen's College

St. Stephen’s College has appealed a Delhi High Court order that mandated the admission of 7 students based on Delhi University’s seat allocation.

The appeal was made before a Division Bench led by Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, who have scheduled a hearing for Tuesday.

The order, issued on Friday by Justice Swarna Kanta Sharma, directed St. Stephen’s College to admit the students according to last year’s seat allocation policy, as Delhi University’s allocation had not been invalidated. The college was instructed to ensure that the students could start classes after completing necessary formalities.

The case arose from two petitions filed by the seven students, who challenged St. Stephen’s admission process. They argued that, despite being allocated seats by Delhi University, their admissions were not finalized in time. The university supported the students’ claims, but St. Stephen’s College contested this, arguing that it was not required to admit all allocated candidates due to its capacity limits.

Initially, the single-judge bench granted provisional admission to six students, noting they met all criteria and were left in limbo despite their merit. The college’s appeal led the Division Bench to suspend these admissions until the main petition is resolved.

A seventh student later joined the case, with all petitioners seeking admission under Delhi University’s ‘single girl child quota.’
