Unnao Rape Case: Delhi HC Modifies Order, Shortens Kuldeep Sengar’s Interim Bail Period

The Delhi High Court reduced the duration of interim bail granted to expelled BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar on Friday so that he could attend his daughter’s wedding.

On January 16, 2023, the Delhi High Court granted Sengar interim bail from January 27 to February 10, 2023, to attend his daughter’s wedding and related functions.

The Division Bench of Justice Mukta Gupta and Justice Poonam A Bamba modified its earlier order on Friday after the victim in the Unnao Rape case moved a plea for recalling its order.

Victim had submitted, through Advocate Mahmood Pracha, that following the passing of the above interim bail order, the victim had received information that the Sengar would harm her and her family after being released from prison.

While modifying the previous order, the court noted that there are two major functions on January 30th (Tilak) in Gorakhpur and a wedding on February 8th in Lucknow. According to the modified order, Sengar will be granted interim bail from January 27 to January 30 in order to attend the Tilak Ceremony, after which he will surrender to the police.

The court said in its new order, “And on February 6, 2023, he shall be released again to attend his daughter’s wedding scheduled for February 8, 2023, and surrender back to the Police on February 10, 2023.”

Sengar was found guilty and given a life sentence for raping a child in Unnao in 2017. He was also convicted and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in the case of custodial death of the father of the victim of the rape case.

He was granted interim bail in this matter for his daughter’s wedding. Sengar’s appeal against his conviction and sentence is currently pending in the High Court. His plea seeking for regular bail is also being considered before the High Court.
