The Allahabad High Court has granted one-week interim bail to Javed Mohammad, also known as Javed “Pump,” who is believed to be the mastermind behind the June 2022 violence in Prayagraj.
This temporary release is to allow him to attend his daughter’s wedding.
Javed gained notoriety following the violent events in the Atala area of Prayagraj on June 10th last year. After Friday prayers, the Atala region saw incidents of violence and arson, resulting in several policemen being injured due to stone-pelting, and a truck and several motorcycles being set ablaze. In August 2023, an FIR was filed against Javed under the Gangster Act.
Javed had reportedly called for a protest in response to controversial statements made by a BJP leader about Prophet Mohammad.
Justice UC Sharma has granted Javed’s interim bail application. The court, having heard all concerned parties, granted the request for one week of interim bail, from October 17, 2023, to October 23, 2023, to allow him to participate in his daughter’s wedding. It was also specified that he must surrender on October 24, 2023, at the District Jail in Deoria.
Furthermore, the court directed the Superintendent of Police/Commissioner in the relevant districts to ensure the applicant’s safety during the aforementioned period. Additionally, it was ordered that the applicant should undergo a medical examination both upon leaving and returning to the jail.
