Allahabad HC Directs ASI To Clean Jama Masjid In Sambhal

The Allahabad High Court on Friday issued a directive mandating the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to undertake a comprehensive cleaning of the premises of the Jama Masjid in Sambhal.

However, the court refrained from authorizing the requested whitewashing of the structure.

Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal rendered this decision in response to a petition submitted by the Committee of Management, Jama Masjid, which sought judicial approval for the whitewashing and general maintenance of the mosque in anticipation of Ramzan.

The previous day, February 27, 2025, the court had instructed an ASI team, accompanied by the Mutawalis, to conduct an on-site assessment and furnish a detailed report by 10:00 a.m. the following day.

The ASI’s assessment concluded that the interior surfaces of the mosque were coated with ceramic paint, thereby negating the necessity for immediate whitewashing. During the subsequent hearing, senior advocate S.F.A. Naqvi, representing the mosque committee, clarified that the request was confined to essential whitewashing and the installation of lighting.

However, the court instead mandated that the ASI undertake a meticulous removal of accumulated dust and overgrown vegetation within the premises.

Naqvi provided assurances to the court that the cleaning process would proceed without any obstructions. Concurrently, the state’s advocate general affirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining public order throughout the execution of the directive.

Additionally, during the preceding hearing on February 27, the Allahabad High Court, in its deliberations, referred to the Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal as an “alleged masjid” and instructed the ASI to assess whether any structural maintenance or repairs were warranted prior to the commencement of Ramzan on March 1.

Amidst these judicial proceedings, the residents of Sambhal anticipate an orderly and tranquil observance of Ramzan, while administrative authorities remain vigilant in ensuring adherence to legal and regulatory frameworks.
