Allahabad HC To Hear Abbas Ansari Revision Plea On July 30

Allahabad High Court

The Allahabad High Court has scheduled July 30 to hear a revision plea filed by Abbas Ansari, son of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, challenging a lower court’s refusal to stay his conviction in a 2022 hate speech case.

The matter was listed before Justice Samir Jain. On a request by Additional Advocate General M.C. Chaturvedi for more time to prepare, the court adjourned the hearing.

Background

Abbas Ansari was convicted on May 31 by a Mau MP-MLA court for making a provocative speech during an election rally in 2022. He was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment under Sections 153-A (promoting enmity between groups) and 189 (threat to a public servant) of the IPC, along with a ₹2,000 fine.

His appeal and a separate application seeking a stay on conviction are both pending. The stay request was rejected by the appellate court on July 5, prompting the current revision before the High Court.

Co-Accused Also Sentenced

His election agent, Mansoor Ansari, present during the speech, was also convicted and sentenced to six months in jail.

The case stems from a 2022 rally in Mau, where Abbas was seen sharing the stage with his brother, who allegedly issued threats to officials. Though Abbas did not issue the threats himself, his presence led to the charges and eventual conviction.
