Former Judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay, a BJP candidate for the Tamluk Lok Sabha seat, moved the Calcutta High Court on Monday, alleging police overaction in registering an attempted murder case against him.
A single bench of Justice Jay Sengupta, directed that the petition would be heard on Tuesday.
Accusing the police of malafide and overaction, Gangopadhyay’s lawyer Rajdeep Majumder argued before the court that the FIR was filed to hinder his election campaign.
Majumder indicated that Gangopadhyay was charged under Section 307 (attempt to murder).
Abhijit Gangopadhyay, who stepped down as a judge of the Calcutta High Court in March, is contesting as a BJP candidate from the Tamluk Lok Sabha constituency. An alleged incident involving protests against him by individuals purporting to be members of a teachers’ organization reportedly occurred when Gangopadhyay went to submit his nomination papers for the elections.
