Bombay HC Confirms Death Penalty On Man For Killing Mother, Eating Body Parts

Death Penalty On Man For Killing Mother, Eating Body Parts

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday confirmed the death sentence for Sunil Kuchkoravi, convicted of murdering and cannibalizing his mother in 2017.

Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Prithviraj Chavan ruled that Kuchkoravi’s case fell under the “rarest of rare” category.

The court noted that Kuchkoravi not only killed his 63-year-old mother, Yallama Rama Kuchkoravi, but also removed and cooked her body parts, including the brain, heart, liver, kidney, and intestine. “He had cooked her ribs and was about to cook her heart. This is a case of cannibalism,” the bench stated.

Citing the severity of the crime, the judges concluded that Kuchkoravi had no chance of reformation. “If given life imprisonment, he may commit a similar crime in jail,” they warned.

Kuchkoravi was initially sentenced to death by a Kolhapur court in 2021 for murdering his mother, allegedly after she refused to give him money to buy liquor. He is currently lodged at Yerwada prison in Pune.

The High Court’s decision was communicated to Kuchkoravi via video conference.
