Bombay High Court Sets Precedent with Ban on Single-Use Plastics

In a significant stride towards environmental conservation, the Bombay High Court has prohibited the use of single-use plastic bottles and bags within its premises.

“On directions of the Chief Justice (Justice DK Upadhyaya), the single-use plastic bottles and bags are banned in the High Court premises, with immediate effect,” the circular issued by the Registrar General of the High Court stated.

This decision is in line with Maharashtra’s wider efforts to tackle plastic pollution. In March 2018, the state government introduced a comprehensive ban on the production, sale, and use of plastic bags and disposable plastic items. The High Court’s recent action underscores its commitment to environmental protection and sets a precedent for other institutions to emulate.

The ban on single-use plastics within the High Court premises is anticipated to substantially decrease plastic waste and encourage more sustainable practices among court staff, lawyers, and visitors. This initiative is a welcome development in the ongoing fight against plastic pollution, which has increasingly concerned both Maharashtra and India as a whole.
