Calcutta HC Demands Action on ‘Illegal Hoardings’ in Bidhannagar

Illegal Hoardings

The Calcutta High Court has issued a notice on a plea seeking directions for the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation to address the issue of illegal hoardings in the Bidhannagar area. The plea asserted that these hoardings pose a danger to local residents and are being installed in an unregulated manner.

A bench of Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya, highlighted the gravity of illegal hoardings, recalling the recent tragic incident in Ghatkopar (Mumbai) which resulted in 17 fatalities and 75 injuries.

“These illegal hoardings are a serious issue, a very serious issue. We remember what happened in Maharashtra.”

Taking note of the petitioner’s concerns, the court directed both the State government and the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation to file a report. The report must explain whether established guidelines for erecting hoardings are being followed and whether the hoardings in question were put up in violation of applicable rules.

The court has scheduled the next hearing for two weeks later, considering the “serious issue” raised by the petitioner appearing in-person.
