Calcutta HC Orders Rehabilitation for Victims of Building Collapse in Garden Reach

The Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed the West Bengal government to provide rehabilitation to individuals displaced due to the collapse of an unauthorized five-storey building in the Garden Reach area of the city earlier this week.

During the hearing, the court set April 4 as the date to hear the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) concerning the building collapse, which resulted in the deaths of at least 10 people and injuries to several others.

A bench comprising Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya directed the state government to arrange rehabilitation for those displaced by the collapse of the five-storey building in Garden Reach early on Monday.

The court directed the state government to furnish the affected individuals with necessary shelter and support, including adequate ration materials, to enable them to care for themselves.

Additionally, the bench directed the relevant authorities to submit a report in the form of an affidavit detailing the remedial actions taken by the state to rehabilitate those affected by the building collapse.

The court was apprised by the petitioner’s counsel that those who perished in the collapse of the under-construction building were residents of shanties surrounding it.”
