The Calcutta High Court declined permission for a Hanuman Jayanti procession to be held on Kolkata’s iconic Red Road, citing the risk of major traffic disruptions on the busy thoroughfare.
Hindu Seva Dal’s Petition Rejected
The plea was filed by the Hindu Seva Dal, seeking approval to organize a religious procession on April 12 to celebrate Hanuman Jayanti, a festival dedicated to Lord Hanuman. The group intended to conduct the event along Red Road, a key arterial route in central Kolkata.
Presiding over the petition, Justice Teerthankar Ghosh observed that such a large gathering could lead to serious traffic congestion, impacting commuters and the city’s routine traffic flow.
Given that thousands of devotees were expected to participate, the court determined that the proposed procession on Red Road was not feasible from a logistical standpoint.
Appeal To Division Bench Also Dismissed
Following the rejection, the Hindu Seva Dal challenged the order and approached the Division Bench headed by the Chief Justice. However, the Bench upheld the single-judge verdict and reiterated its refusal to allow the procession on Red Road.
While turning down the request, the Division Bench provided a constructive alternative. The court noted that the group may consider organizing the procession at RR Avenue or Shaheed Minar, or hold a Hanuman Chalisa Path—a religious recital—as part of the celebrations.
The Bench clarified that if the organization agrees to the revised plan, it may submit a fresh application for permission to hold the event at one of the suggested locations.

Hanuman Jayanti, celebrated annually to mark the birth of Lord Hanuman, holds immense spiritual significance for Hindus. Lord Hanuman, known for his devotion to Lord Rama and unmatched strength and courage, is revered across the country. Devotees often mark the occasion with processions, prayers, and recitals of the Hanuman Chalisa.
City Gears Up Amid Restrictions
Despite the court’s refusal to allow the Red Road event, preparations for Hanuman Jayanti continue across the city, with various temples and religious groups expected to hold celebrations in compliance with local guidelines.
The court’s decision highlights the balance between religious freedom and urban management, ensuring that festivities do not come at the cost of public inconvenience.
