Calcutta High Court Steps In After Lawyers Heckled By Mob

The Calcutta High Court has taken suo motu (on its own) notice of an incident where a group of lawyers, including senior advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, were heckled by a mob near the court premises.

In response, a special 3-judge bench has been formed to look into the matter.

Chief Justice Takes Immediate Action

Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam responded strongly to the reports, stating that such incidents pose a threat to the safety and dignity of legal professionals. He directed that a bench of three judges be set up to take up the issue and ensure justice is served.

Notices Issued To Key Legal Authorities

The High Court has also issued notices to the Advocate General of West Bengal, the Additional Solicitor General, and secretaries of major legal bodies within the court, namely the Bar Association, the Bar Library Club, and the Incorporated Law Society.

Incident Happened Outside Lawyers’ Chambers

According to reports, the heckling took place just outside the lawyers’ chambers and allegedly involved some litigants. The situation caused concern among members of the legal community, prompting calls for better protection and swift action.

Police Investigation Underway

The local police have been informed, and an investigation into the incident is currently ongoing. The Court is also monitoring the steps being taken by the authorities to maintain law and order in the court premises.

In taking up the matter suo motu, the Calcutta High Court reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of lawyers and ensuring the smooth functioning of the judicial system.
