The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday dismissed the bail application filed by Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mondal’s in connection with alleged cattle smuggling case.

Mondal had requested for bail, claiming that he had been detained for more than 145 days in connection with the matter.

During the hearing the CBI has opposed the bail application stating that he may derail the investigation into cattle smuggling by trying to influence witnesses who were being probed. A division bench of Justices Joymalya Bagchi and AK Gupta rejected the bail plea, observing that the court is not inclined to grant the request at this stage.

According to the Central Bureau of Investigation, Mondal used his political clout to facilitate the smooth transportation of cattle through Birbhum district for smuggling to Bangladesh.
Mondal’s attorney said that no such proof had been discovered. Mondal is the Birbhum district president of West Bengal’s ruling TMC.
