The Central government recently appointed Senior Advocate Devang Girish Vyas as Additional Solicitor General (ASG) of India for the Bombay High Court.
His appointment is for a period of 6 months or until a regular ASG is appointed. Vyas is already serving as an ASG at the Gujarat High Court.
This appointment followed the conclusion of the 9-year tenure of incumbent ASG Anil C Singh on June 30. Singh chose not to seek an extension and will return to private practice. However, sources mentioned that he will still represent the government in specific matters when called upon as special counsel.
Anil C Singh has a remarkable record, having held the office of ASG in the Bombay High Court for the longest duration. He became a designated senior advocate in September 2012.
During his tenure, Singh appeared in various significant cases, including criminal cases related to the Malegaon bomb blast of 2008 and the Bhima Koregaon riot case of 2018.
Additionally, Singh represented central agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement Directorate in cases involving political figures, such as members of the Nationalist Congress Party, Anil Deshmukh, Nawab Malik, and Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha member, Sanjay Raut. He also appeared for the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in drug-related cases, including those involving actress Rhea Chakraborty and Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan’s son, Aryan Khan.
