Centre Clears Appointment Of 3 Additional Judges To Calcutta HC

The Collegium also recommended 2 other lawyers, Md Talay Masood Siddiqui and Krishnaraj Thaker, for appointment, but their names have not been approved yet.

The Central government approved the appointment of 3 lawyers as additional judges to the Calcutta High Court. The lawyers appointed are:

-Smita Das De

-Reetobroto Kumar Mitra

-Om Narayan Rai

-Arjun Ram Meghwal, the Minister of Law and Justice, announced the appointments on X (formerly Twitter).

These 3 were among 5 advocates recommended for judgeship by the Supreme Court collegium on February 28.

However, the appointments of the other two lawyers, Md Talay Masood Siddiqui and Krishnaraj Thaker, have not been approved yet.

As of February 1, the Calcutta High Court is operating with 43 judges, out of the 72 positions it is authorized to have, leaving a vacancy of 29 judges.
