Allahabad HC

The Union Ministry of Law and Justice notified the elevation of seven Additional Judges from the Allahabad High Court as Permanent Judges.

The notification issued in this regard stated that, in exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution, the President, after consultation with the Chief Justice, is pleased to appoint the Additional Judges of Allahabad High Court as Permanent Judges in that High Court.

The judges who have been elevated to the position of Permanent Judges for the Allahabad High Court are Justices Umesh Chandra Sharma, Renu Agarwal, Ram Manohar Narayan Mishra, Mayank Kumar Jain, Shiv Shanker Prasad, Gajendra Kumar, and Nalin Kumar Srivastava.

The recommendation for their appointment as permanent judges had recently been put forth by the Supreme Court Collegium. The Collegium comprised of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, and Sanjiv Khanna.

According to the resolution of the Collegium, the unanimous recommendations for these appointments were made by the Allahabad High Court Collegium on May 1, 2023. Both the Chief Minister and Governor of Uttar Pradesh have concurred with these recommendations, as per the established Memorandum of Procedure.

The resolution also emphasized that judges of the Supreme Court who are knowledgeable about the workings of the Allahabad High Court were consulted to assess the suitability of these Additional Judges for permanent positions. A committee of two judges from the Supreme Court was formed to evaluate the judgments delivered by these Additional Judges.

Upon reviewing all the available material, including the opinions of the consultee judges and the report from the Judgment Evaluation Committee, the Collegium concluded that these seven Additional Judges are indeed fit and suitable for appointment as permanent judges.
