The Central government, through the Ministry of Law and Justice on Friday notified the appointment of Justice Nilay Vipinchandra Anjaria as Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court.
The notification issued stated that, under the authority vested by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President has appointed Justice Nilay Vipinchandra Anjaria, currently serving as a Judge in the Gujarat High Court, to assume the role of Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court.
This appointment takes effect from the date he assumes office, following the retirement of Justice P S Dinesh Kumar, the current Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, on February 24, 2024.
On February 7, the Supreme Court Collegium proposed the appointment of Justice N V Anjaria as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, effective from the date of the incumbent Chief Justice’s retirement.
The Collegium highlighted that Justice Anjaria has served as a Judge in the Gujarat High Court since his appointment on November 21, 2011. Prior to his judicial appointment, he practiced law in the Gujarat High Court, specializing in civil, constitutional, company law, labour, and service matters.
The Collegium recognized his competence, extensive legal knowledge, and impeccable integrity, noting that he has upheld the standards expected of a judicial officer.
Considering the existing distribution of Chief Justices among the High Courts, the Collegium acknowledged that Justice Ashish J Desai, hailing from the Gujarat High Court, currently serves as the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court and is scheduled to retire on July 4, 2024. After careful consideration of all relevant factors, the Collegium concluded that Justice N V Anjaria is well-suited and qualified to assume the role of Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court.
