Congress MP Hibi Eden Moves Adjournment Motion In LS Over Bombay HC Judge Appointment

Congress MP Hibi Eden on Wednesday has called for a detailed discussion in the Lok Sabha over 2 separate issues—one concerning the appointment of a Bombay High Court judge with a political background, and the other, the recent arrest of 2 Catholic nuns and a tribal youth in Chhattisgarh.

Eden submitted a notice for an Adjournment Motion, questioning the appointment of a Bombay High Court judge who, he said, had earlier served as a spokesperson for a major political party.

In his motion, Eden stated, “That this House do adjourn its business to discuss a definite matter of urgent public importance, namely the appointment of a judge to the Bombay High Court, who previously served as a spokesperson for a major political party, raising concerns about the judge’s impartiality and independence.”

He argued that such an appointment risks eroding the perception of neutrality in the judiciary and could severely impact public trust in the legal system. Emphasising the urgency of the matter, he urged the Speaker to allow a debate in the House.

“Immediate discussion is necessary to address concerns and ensure that the judiciary maintains its integrity and independence… It is essential to discuss this matter urgently in the Lok Sabha to ensure that the judiciary maintains its integrity and continues to inspire public trust,” his notice further stated.

Motion Also Filed Over Nuns’ Arrest In Chhattisgarh

Earlier this week, on Monday, Eden had filed another Adjournment Motion demanding a discussion on the arrest of two Catholic nuns and a tribal youth in Chhattisgarh, who were booked on human trafficking charges.

According to Eden, the individuals who were arrested have now filed complaints against members of the Bajrang Dal, alleging harassment. He noted that the situation demands immediate attention due to its implications for communal harmony and minority rights.

“To discuss the arrest of 2 Catholic nuns and a tribal youth. The victims have now lodged a complaint against Bajrang Dal activists, necessitating a thorough investigation,” Eden wrote in his earlier notice.

Through both motions, the Congress MP has sought parliamentary intervention into matters he believes carry deep constitutional and societal consequences.
