Controversial Remarks On Col Sofia Qureshi: Madhya Pradesh HC Orders FIR Against Minister Vijay Shah

The Madhya Pradesh High Court on Wednesday directed police to register an FIR against state Tribal Affairs Minister Vijay Shah over his controversial remarks allegedly targeting Colonel Sofia Qureshi, a decorated officer of the Indian Army.

Remarks Spark Outrage

Shah, a senior BJP leader, had made objectionable comments in what appeared to be a direct attack on Colonel Qureshi, attempting to associate her with terrorists. His remarks followed regular press briefings held by Colonel Qureshi, along with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, during ‘Operation Sindoor’—a military campaign launched by Indian armed forces targeting terrorist hideouts.

Colonel Qureshi’s role in the operation, including public communications on its progress, had drawn widespread appreciation. However, Shah’s comments triggered public outrage and political condemnation, with the Congress party demanding his immediate removal from the state cabinet.

Court Takes Suo Motu Cognisance

Responding to the controversy, a division bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court comprising Justices Atul Sreedharan and Anuradha Shukla initiated suo motu proceedings and ordered that a First Information Report be filed against Shah.

The court directed the police to register the FIR by 6 p.m. on Wednesday and instructed authorities to keep the court informed about the filing. The next hearing in the matter is scheduled for Thursday at 10:30 a.m. A detailed judicial order is awaited.

Shah Offers Apology Amid Backlash

Amid mounting criticism, Vijay Shah issued a public statement saying, “If anyone is hurt by my statement, I am ready to apologise 10 times.” He added that he respects Colonel Qureshi “more than my sister.”

However, the apology has not quelled demands for his resignation, with opposition leaders and social groups calling for accountability.

Broader Implications

The incident has reignited debates about the responsibility of public representatives and the limits of political speech, especially when directed at serving defence personnel. Colonel Sofia Qureshi is a highly respected officer known for her leadership and representation of the armed forces on international platforms.

The court’s swift action signals the judiciary’s stance on upholding the dignity of military personnel and maintaining the sanctity of public discourse.

With the FIR now mandated and a follow-up hearing scheduled, the case is likely to escalate politically and legally. Whether Shah faces further disciplinary or legal consequences will depend on the ongoing proceedings and the findings of the police investigation.
