Former Chief Justice of Kerala High Court, Justice S Manikumar, is set to be the new chairperson of the State Human Rights Commission.
The decision emerged from a three-member selection panel comprising Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Leader of the Opposition VD Satheesan, and Speaker of the Kerala Assembly AN Shamseer.
However, a dissenting opinion on this decision was voiced by Satheesan, who opposed the appointment, citing concerns about the undemocratic and mysterious nature of Justice Manikumar’s selection. In a detailed note of disagreement addressed to the government, Satheesan expressed reservations regarding Justice Manikumar’s potential to discharge duties impartially and with fairness.
Justice S Manikumar will assume office after Governor Arif Mohammed Khan clears the government proposal.
The vacancy in the chairperson’s post arose following the retirement of Justice Antony Dominic in May. Presently, the responsibilities are being overseen by Judicial member K Baujinath.
Justice Manikumar, having previously served as a judge of the Madras High Court, subsequently assumed the position of Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court in October 2019. His retirement from the High Court transpired on April 24, marking the culmination of his distinguished judicial career.
