The family of Akshay Shinde, who was killed in a police encounter following allegations in the Badlapur rape case, has approached the Bombay High Court on Friday seeking permission to locate a burial site for him. The family has faced significant challenges in securing land for Shinde’s grave.
Background
Initially, the family attempted to find a burial site in Badlapur, followed by efforts in Ambarnath, both of which were unsuccessful. Consequently, they filed a petition through their lawyer, Amit Katarnavare.
Court Proceedings
During the hearing, Katarnavare informed the court that Shinde’s father, Anna Shinde, had identified a potential burial location in Ambarnath. However, when Anna visited the site, he was denied permission by the officer in charge, resulting in frustration and a lack of clarity regarding the necessary procedures.
In response to the family’s predicament, the court directed the public prosecutor to ensure that law and order is maintained in the area to prevent any disturbances. The prosecutor confirmed that two police officers have been stationed outside Shinde’s residence to mitigate any potential issues and indicated some progress in identifying a cemetery, though complications remain.
Judge’s Remarks
Judge Mohite-Dere expressed discontent regarding lawyers making public statements about the case, stating, “What is this? Why are lawyers giving statements? Lawyers should stick to their profession. We do not understand why they are making statements outside. Our effort is to ensure that only truth prevails.”
Current Status
The court has acknowledged the petition and is currently reviewing the circumstances surrounding the burial rights of Akshay Shinde.
