“Few More Judges To Be Appointed In Bombay HC Soon”: CJI DY Chandrachud

The Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, announced today that the appointment of new judges to the Bombay High Court is expected to occur soon, following recent recommendations from the Supreme Court Collegium.

During a hearing on a Special Leave Petition (SLP) regarding the expedited consideration of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Bombay High Court, CJI Chandrachud, alongside Justice Manoj Misra, noted the urgency of the situation. The counsel for the petitioner emphasized that petitions are only listed for hearing if they are specifically mentioned before the bench.

On September 24, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended the following advocates for appointment as judges of the Bombay High Court:

1. Ms. Nivedita Prakash Mehta
2. Shri Prafulla Surendrakumar Khubalkar
3. Shri Ashwin Damodar Bhobe
4. Shri Rohit Wasudeo Joshi
5. Shri Advait Mahendra Sethna
6. Shri Rajesh Sudhakar Datar
7. Shri Sachin Shivajirao Deshmukh
8. Shri Gautam Ashwin Ankhad
9. Shri Mahendra Madhavrao Nerlikar

Currently, the Bombay High Court has 28 vacancies out of a sanctioned strength of 94 judges.
