Jharkhand Govt Introduces Safety Measures for Foreign Tourists After Alleged Gangrape Incident

The Jharkhand government presented a draft standard operating procedure (SOP) for the safety of foreign tourists visiting the state before the high court.

The SOP was introduced following the alleged gangrape of a foreign tourist in Dumka.

During the hearing of a petition on the matter, the bench of Acting Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar and Justice Navneet Kumar was informed by the state government about the inclusion of two helpline numbers in the SOP.

Additionally, an app has been developed with an SOS option to provide immediate assistance.

It was stated in court that any foreign tourist entering Jharkhand will have access to police and assistance through the helpline numbers and the app. This service will also be extended to other tourists visiting the state.

Foreign tourists will be required to provide identification at the first police outpost they encounter upon entering the state.

The information will be recorded in a centralized database monitored by the government, and tourists will receive guidance to their desired destinations, as per the counsel’s statement.

The next hearing is scheduled for April 4.

Last month, a tourist from Spain was allegedly gangraped in Dumka district, Jharkhand.
