Jharkhand HC Reduces Jail Term Of Ex-JMM MLA Amit Mahto

The Jharkhand High Court’s decision to reduce the jail sentence of former JMM MLA Amit Kumar Mahto from two years to one year.

Mahto was sentenced to 2 years in jail by a lower court for violation of Section 506 of the IPC in 2018.

In June 2006, the former Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) MLA and his 8 supporters were convicted for hitting Sonahatu CO Alok Kumar with sticks, knife, bow, and arrow.

Mahto along with his supporters were also slapped with a fine of Rs 45,000 each.

Therefore, the former MLA has lost his assembly membership after the lower court’s orders.

Later, he filed an appeal petition in the high court of Jharkhand seeking the decision’s review. Hearing the petition, the division bench of Justices S Chandrashekhar and Ratnakar Bhengra turn down the sentence of former MLA Amit Mahto to 1 year for making him eligible to the contest elections.

In 2024, the decision ahead of the elections scheduled is seen as a great relief to the former MLA. Therefore, it might be some political implications, too.

Now, the Silli constituency is represented by AJSU chief Sudesh Mahto.

Therefore, Sudesh lost the 2014 elections to Amit Mahto.
