“Judges Must Not Be Influenced By Media Trials, Public Scrutiny”: Jharkhand HC Judge Roshan

Jharkhand High Court judge Justice Deepak Roshan on Tuesday emphasised that judges must remain insulated from media narratives and public pressure while deciding high-profile cases.

Speaking at an interactive session with students of the India International University of Legal Education and Research (IIULER) in South Goa, Justice Roshan underlined the importance of judicial objectivity.

On Media Trials

Responding to a query about dealing with heightened public scrutiny, he said, “Getting influenced by media trials goes against the very principle of the rule of law and the right to a fair trial.”

He stressed that judges must remain confident in their decisions and focus only on the material on record.

Justice Roshan also addressed the oft-debated issue of judges maintaining social connections.

“Social life is also necessary. I don’t avoid it,” he said, adding that interaction with society is not problematic as long as judicial conduct remains fair and impartial.

“There is no harm in social interaction as long as the pen of the judge remains just. In such a situation, no one can question a judge for spending time with people,” he remarked.

Advice To Young Judges

He urged newly elevated judges to avoid haste, especially in the early years of service.

“Decisions should always be based solely on the material available on record to minimise the risk of bias or error,” he advised.

On the growing role of technology, Justice Roshan said artificial intelligence cannot replace the judicial system, but it can play a crucial role in improving efficiency.
“AI can significantly aid in handling routine tasks and improve overall efficiency,” he noted.
