Justice Sunita Agarwal Sworn in as Gujarat HC Chief Justice

Justice Sunita Agarwal was recently sworn in as the 29th Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court, making her the second woman to hold this prestigious position in the Gujarat High Court.

The oath of office was administered by Governor Acharya Devvrat at a ceremony held at Raj Bhavan in Gandhinagar. The event was graced by the presence of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Speaker of Gujarat Assembly Shankar Chaudhary, and Minister of Law and Justice Rushikesh Patel.

The proposal for Justice Agarwal’s appointment as the Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court was put forward by the Supreme Court collegium on July 5. The apex court also highlighted that she would be the only woman currently serving as a chief justice among all high courts in the country.

Before Justice Agarwal, Justice Sonia Gokani briefly held the position of Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court until her retirement on February 25, 2023. After her retirement, Justice AJ Desai acted as the Chief Justice.

Born on April 30, 1966, Justice Agarwal completed her law degree from Awadh University in 1989. She enrolled as an advocate on December 16, 1990, and practiced on the civil side at Allahabad High Court. Her career progressed, and she was elevated as an Additional Judge of Allahabad High Court on November 21, 2011. Later, on August 6, 2013, she took the oath as a Permanent Judge of Allahabad High Court, as stated in her brief profile uploaded on the Gujarat HC website.
