Kerala HC Grants Relief to Woman Accused of Killing her Newborn Baby

Newborn Baby

The Kerala High Court on Monday granted bail to a woman accused of throwing her newborn baby from the balcony of her apartment in Kochi’s Panampilly Nagar, resulting in the infant’s death.

The incident occurred on May 3, when the 23-year-old woman gave birth to the child in her bathroom without anyone’s knowledge. A single bench of Justice CS Dias granted her bail.

The woman was arrested after passersby discovered a plastic bag containing the deceased newborn on the morning of May 3. Police identified her by scanning the barcode on the plastic bag, which was from an online shopping platform.

Reportedly, the woman told police that she initially tried to strangle the baby and had planned to dispose of the body elsewhere. However, she flung the baby out through her balcony when her mother, who was unaware of the pregnancy and subsequent birth, knocked on the door.

The woman further claimed that the pregnancy resulted from being raped by a man she had met online.
