The Kerala High Court has directed the Transport Commissioner and the State Police Chief to take stern action against motor vehicles violating road safety, noise, and air pollution standards, ensuring they are not used in public places.
A division bench of Justices Anil K Narendran and Harisankar V Menon passed the order in response to a plea initiated by the court regarding the use of contract and stage carriages that openly flout safety standards.
The bench noted that violations such as unauthorized fittings, recording videos inside the driver’s cabin while the vehicle is in motion, and uploading such recordings, as well as vehicle alterations, pose a threat to the safety of other road users and passengers.
The court instructed the Transport Commissioner and the State Police Chief to ensure that “motor vehicles which violate the standards prescribed in relation to road safety, control of noise and air pollution, and pose a serious threat to the safety of its passengers and other road users, are not used in public places.”
The court scheduled the matter for further hearing on July 18, 2024.
