Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, appeared at the CBI Special Crime Branch in Salt Lake, Kolkata, on Saturday.
The investigation into alleged financial irregularities at the hospital, initially handled by a Special Investigation Team, has been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation by the Calcutta High Court.
As part of the court’s orders, Kolkata Police confirmed that all relevant documents concerning the financial allegations have been handed over to the CBI by the SIT.
The High Court has also authorized the CBI to conduct a polygraph test on Dr. Ghosh and five others connected to the case. These five individuals include four doctors who had dinner with a deceased colleague on the day of the incident and one civic volunteer.
This investigation follows a petition by Akhtar Ali, the former deputy superintendent of the hospital, accusing Dr. Ghosh of financial misconduct. The CBI is now in charge of the case, which also ties into the ongoing investigation into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the same hospital.
The Court has given the CBI three weeks to present a progress report, which is due on September 17.
In a related case, Sanjay Roy, the main suspect in the rape and murder of the trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College, has been remanded to 14 days of judicial custody by the Sealdah Court. His custody will continue until September 6, 2024, under CBI supervision.
Earlier this week, the Supreme Court ordered the security of RG Kar Medical College to be handed over to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). This move is part of efforts to enhance security at the hospital amid ongoing protests and heightened tensions in West Bengal. The trainee doctor was tragically found dead in the hospital’s seminar hall on August 9.
