Land Dispute: Telangana High Court Adjourns Hearing To April 7

The Telangana High Court on Thursday deferred the hearing of a case concerning a 400-acre land parcel adjacent to the University of Hyderabad (UoH) to April 7.

The land dispute has gained attention due to the state government’s development plans and opposition from various groups.

Court Halts Work For A Day

Previously on Wednesday, the High Court directed the Telangana government to halt all activities on the land for a day, pending further hearings. When the case was heard on Thursday, the petitioners’ lawyers informed the court about the Supreme Court’s recent directive, which instructed the Telangana Chief Secretary to ensure that no trees were cut in the Kancha Gachibowli forest area until further orders.

State Government Defends Development Plans

Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, representing the Telangana government, argued that the state is expecting investments worth ₹50,000 crore from the proposed development of the land. He added that this project could create around five lakh jobs, making it crucial for the state’s economic growth.

Court also instructed the state government to submit its response to various petitions, including an interlocutory application filed by senior advocate S. Niranjana Reddy. The application stated that a UoH student was detained by the police while trying to take pictures at the disputed site.

Political & Student Protests Against The Project

The state government’s plan to develop IT infrastructure on the 400-acre land has sparked protests from University of Hyderabad student groups. Additionally, political parties, including the BJP and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), have opposed the move, adding to the controversy surrounding the project.

With the case now scheduled for hearing on April 7, the fate of the disputed land remains uncertain, as legal, political, and environmental concerns continue to shape the debate
