Madras High Court Demands Report on Shankar’s Health

Renowned YouTuber and political commentator, ‘Savukku’ Shankar, has been imprisoned in Coimbatore Jail for allegedly possessing “Ganja” and for passing defamatory remarks against women police officials.

Court’s Hearing

On Wednesday, the Madras High Court has asked the Coimbatore District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) to present a report regarding the health condition of Savukku Shankar. After Shankar’s mother, A. Kamala, filed a petition for a writ of habeas corpus, the vacation bench comprising Justices AD Jagadish Chandira and R. Kalaimathi directed the High Court Registry to procure the report from the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), whose four-member team had already visited the prison to ascertain Shankar’s health conditions following another petition filed in the local court.

The advocate representing Savukku Shankar’s mother, Senior counsel John Sathyan, said that prior to Savukku’s arrest, Savukku did not have any kind of injuries on his body, whereas when he visited him in the prison, he observed that he had sustained injuries. However, the government advocate representing the police informed the court that Shankar sustained injuries to his left hand, right foot, and lips during an accident involving the van transporting him to Coimbatore, which occurred at Dharapuram. The prison doctor had conducted an examination, certifying the injuries, and Shankar had acknowledged them by affixing his thumb impression on the medical report.
