Manipur High Court Turns to ChatGPT for Research in Landmark Order

The Manipur High Court recently disclosed its use of ChatGPT for research in a service matter involving the disengagement of a Village Defence Force (VDF) personnel in the case of Md Zakir Hussain v. State of Manipur.

Justice A Guneshwar Sharma employed the AI tool to aid in revoking the removal from service after the government counsel failed to provide necessary information. The judge resorted to Google and ChatGPT to gather crucial details, recording this effort in the order.

Using AI, the Court found that the Village Defence Force (VDF) in Manipur was established to enhance local security and assist the police, particularly in rural areas. The VDF, initiated by the Manipur Police, comprises trained local volunteers who guard villages against threats like insurgent activities and ethnic violence.

The Court also discovered an Office Memorandum from the Home Department, Manipur, outlining VDF service conditions, including a mandatory show cause notice before any disciplinary action is taken against VDF personnel.

The Court ruled that the disengagement order violated principles of natural justice and ordered the immediate reinstatement of the petitioner.
