Money Laundering Case: Bombay HC Extends Interim Bail Granted to Jet Airways Founder Naresh Goyal

The Bombay High Court on Friday granted the plea of Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal for an extension of his interim medical bail in the money laundering case filed against him by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

A single judge, Justice NJ Jamadar granted the extension after reviewing an affidavit filed by the Jet Airways founder, which highlighted his doctor’s recommendation for Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication surgery. Goyal indicated his preference to undergo the surgery within four weeks, subject to his surgical fitness.

The Court extended the interim bail by another four weeks. On May 6, the High Court had initially granted Goyal interim bail for two months to undergo cancer treatment. Goyal sought an additional four-week extension on July 3.

The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) was willing to grant an extension of only three weeks, provided Goyal underwent a medical assessment at Tata Memorial Hospital first. Consequently, the Court instructed both parties to file affidavits outlining their positions. After reviewing Goyal’s affidavit, the Court approved the plea.

Naresh Goyal had previously approached the sessions court for bail, which allowed him to consult private doctors. The subsequent medical check-up revealed malignant tumors, leading to his request for interim medical bail. The special judge permitted Goyal to be hospitalized for two months for cancer treatment.

Though his request for permanent bail on medical grounds was rejected in April, Goyal was permitted to continue his treatment in the hospital.

The Bombay High Court, on May 6, granted him two months of interim medical bail, directing him to remain within the jurisdiction of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Mumbai.
