NCSC Chief Visits Karur Stampede Site; Madras HC Forms SIT

National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) Chairman Kishor Makwana on Saturday visited the site of the September 27 Karur stampede, where 41 people lost their lives during a rally organised by actor-politician Vijay’s Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party.

The District Collector accompanied him during the inspection.

SIT Formed to Investigate Incident

Following the tragedy, the Madras High Court has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Inspector-General of Police (North) Asra Garg to probe the incident. The Court has directed Karur Police to hand over all relevant documents to the SIT without delay.

Karur Superintendent of Police K Josh Thangaiah, responding to questions about action against TVK leaders, said:

“Madras High Court has constituted Special Investigation Team.”

Ban On Political Rallies Along Highways

As part of preventive measures, the Court has banned political rallies, roadshows, and similar public gatherings along state and national highways in Tamil Nadu until Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are prepared to ensure safety.

Bail Pleas of TVK Leaders Rejected

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has dismissed the anticipatory bail petitions of TVK General Secretary Anand and Joint Secretary CTR Nirmal Kumar in connection with the stampede.

Justice N Senthilkumar also rejected the bail plea of TVK district secretary N Sathish Kumar, questioning the party’s inability to control the massive crowd. The Court highlighted the “unruly behaviour” of party cadres, noting instances of rampage and damage to public property during the rally.
