The Jharkhand High Court on Friday dismissed the writ petition filed by incarcerated former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), and refused to grant him bail.

However, a bench of Justice Rongon Mukhopadhyay granted him permission to attend his uncle’s funeral rites on May 6 under police custody.

Soren, through his earlier petition, challenged his arrest by the ED. The court had reserved its order on the matter on February 28.

ED Arrest

The former chief minister was apprehended by the ED on January 31 in connection with a money laundering case associated with an alleged land scam. He is currently in judicial custody, housed at the Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi. Following a 13-day custody by the ED, Soren was transferred to the Birsa Munda Central Jail on February 15.
