Punjab and Haryana High Court
Senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, currently in judicial custody, has been granted 3 weeks by the Punjab and Haryana High Court to amend his petition challenging his arrest.
The case will next be heard on July 29.
During Tuesday’s hearing of his bail application, Majithia’s lawyer requested additional time to revise the petition. The High Court accepted the request, allowing him until then to file the amended documents.
Majithia was arrested on June 25 by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau in connection with a disproportionate assets case under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Searches were conducted at his Amritsar residence, and he was taken into custody and sent to Mohali court the following day.
Initially remanded for seven days by the Vigilance Bureau, his custody was later extended by four days. Subsequently, on Sunday, the Mohali court placed Majithia in judicial custody until July 19 in a separate money laundering case linked to drug allegations. He is currently held at New Nabha Jail.
At the court hearing, Special Public Prosecutor Ferry Sofat noted that the bail plea filed on July 4 contained errors, prompting the court to direct a fresh filing. The revised application is now expected before the court on July 29.
Meanwhile, SAD leader Daljit S Cheema condemned the Punjab government’s heightened security measures following Majithia’s arrest. He drew parallels to the Emergency era and accused the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of conducting a vendetta campaign.
“This government wants to defame the Akali Dal leadership by spreading lies and false propaganda. This is vendetta politics,” Cheema said, reflecting ongoing political tensions in the state.
