PWD Officials Turn Off CCTV To Party Inside Karnataka HC; 5 Suspended

Karnataka High Court

In a serious breach of protocol and security, the Karnataka Public Works Department (PWD) has suspended 5 officials for organizing a birthday celebration inside the Karnataka High Court premises.

The incident came to light after it was discovered that CCTV cameras were intentionally switched off to facilitate the unauthorized event.

Suspension For Security Breach & Misconduct

The officials suspended include First Division Assistant GH Chikkegowda and Assistant Engineers Lavanya, Meena A.T., Naveen, and Amin S. Anandini. As per an official order issued on April 5, they have been suspended pending a departmental inquiry or until further disciplinary decisions are made.

The order stated that switching off the CCTV system without prior permission to host a private celebration was a serious security lapse and reflected a clear dereliction of duty. “Such conduct is not expected from government employees,” it added, recommending disciplinary action.

Private Party At High-Security Building Raises Alarm

According to the government order, government buildings, especially those with high-security significance like the High Court, are reserved only for events celebrating important personalities as officially notified. Hosting a private birthday party within the High Court campus was deemed a serious offence.

The incident reportedly occurred in February and came under scrutiny after a complaint was filed in March. Following this, the Chief Engineer (Communication and Building), Shivamogga, conducted a preliminary inquiry into the matter.

Role Of Non-High Court Staff Highlighted

Investigators found that Lavanya and Amin S. Anandini—two of the suspended assistant engineers—were not posted at the High Court. Additionally, Meena A.T., whose birthday was being celebrated, was found to be working in the Urban Development Department on deputation.

Sources indicate that Chikkegowda allegedly instructed others to turn off the CCTV cameras before the celebration began, raising further concerns about intent and planning.

More Names Surface In The Investigation

Besides the suspended officials, several other individuals are reportedly under scrutiny for their involvement in planning the event. The department is currently reviewing all angles of the incident as part of its ongoing inquiry.

This unusual episode has sparked questions around employee conduct, misuse of government premises, and internal security protocols, especially within high-profile institutions like the judiciary.
