Rajasthan HC Allows Student Whose Candidature Was Cancelled to Participate in IIT Counselling

The Rajasthan High Court has recently granted permission to a student, whose candidature was canceled due to the failure of uploading documents, to participate in the counselling process for IIT admissions.

A single bench of Dr. Justice Pushpendra Singh Bhati passed the interim order in response to a writ petition filed by a student named Divyanshu Meena.

The petitioner, who secured Rank 838 in JEE (Main) and 704 in JEE (Advanced) in the ST category, explained that he had submitted his options in the online seat allotment process based on his rank. However, due to a technical glitch, he was unable to upload his Class XII certificate and medical certificate within the stipulated time frame, which subsequently led to the cancellation of his candidature.

Expressing the frustration of two years’ worth of effort going to waste due to a mere technical glitch, the petitioner approached the High Court through a writ petition, seeking the restoration of his candidature and the opportunity to participate in the counselling process.

The Court ordered that a copy of the petition be served to the standing counsel for the Union Government and the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA), chaired by IIT Guwahati. The matter has been scheduled for further hearing on July 18.

“In the meanwhile, the petitioner shall be permitted to participate in the counselling process for the current academic year as per schedule provided by the respondent. However, the same shall not be given final effect to without permission of this Court”, the bench added.
