Rape Case: Kerala HC Grants Anticipatory Bail To Rapper Vedan

Kerala High Court

The Kerala High Court on Wednesday granted anticipatory bail to Malayalam rapper Hiran Das Murali, popularly known as Vedan, in a case alleging rape on the false promise of marriage.

Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas delivered the order, clarifying that allegations of other offences against the rapper were not under consideration in this petition. The relief comes after the police had issued a lookout notice fearing that Vedan, who had been absconding, might attempt to flee abroad.

Allegations By Complainant

The case was filed by a doctor who claimed she met Vedan on Instagram in 2021. Their friendship reportedly turned into a relationship, during which Vedan allegedly promised marriage. Relying on this assurance, she said they engaged in physical relations multiple times between 2021 and 2023 in Kozhikode, Kochi, and other places.

The complaint also stated that they briefly lived together and that she extended him financial support, including funds for his debut album and travel expenses.

Opposing his bail plea, her counsel argued that Vedan had “similarly deceived other young women” and should not be granted relief.

Defence Stand

Vedan’s counsel countered that the relationship was consensual, initiated after the complainant approached him as a fan. He maintained that the complaint was motivated by personal differences and insisted that each case must be examined independently.

The court agreed with this position, observing that other accusations could not be linked to the present petition.

Past Legal Troubles

This is not the first time the 25-year-old rapper has faced legal challenges. Earlier this year, he secured bail from the High Court in a case involving possession of a leopard tooth. In April, he was arrested during a narcotics raid but was later released.

Career & Current Shadow

Vedan, who rose to prominence under the banner Voice of the Voiceless, is known for his socially conscious rap and has written lyrics for acclaimed films such as Nayattu, Karam, and Manjummel Boys. Despite his growing popularity, the recent allegations have cast a shadow over his rising career.

Court’s decision to grant anticipatory bail is a crucial relief for the artist, but investigations into this case — and a few other similar complaints — remain ongoing. The outcome will likely determine both his legal standing and the future of his music career.
