Ashish Chanchlani
The Guwahati High Court recently granted interim protection from arrest to Chanchlani, provided he appears before the investigating agency.
In its February 18 order, the court noted that there were no specific allegations against him in the FIR and that he was willing to cooperate with the investigation. It also mentioned that one of the co-accused had already received protection from the Supreme Court.
As a result, Chanchlani was instructed to present himself before the Investigating Officer of Cyber Police Station, Case No. 03/2025, within ten days. If he complied, he would be granted interim bail in case of arrest.
The case stems from an episode filmed on November 14, 2024, at Khar Habitat, which was aired recently. The show involved the use of abusive language by the panelists, including Chanchlani, Allahbadia, comedian Samay Raina, and others. Following a complaint filed on February 10, an FIR was registered at the Cyber Police Station, Guwahati Crime Branch, against Chanchlani and others.
Chanchlani has been booked under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges related to insulting a woman’s modesty, employing a child for an offence, selling obscene objects to a child, and engaging in obscene acts and songs. He is also facing charges under the Information Technology Act, 2000, the Cinematograph Act, 1952, and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986.
In response to the FIR, Chanchlani has approached the Supreme Court, seeking to transfer the case from Guwahati to Mumbai. The Supreme Court has issued a notice regarding his plea, and further proceedings are awaited.
