RG Kar Rape-Murder Victim’s Father Moves HC Seeking Nod For Lawyers To Visit Crime Scene

Calcutta High Court

The father of the doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata’s R G Kar Medical College and Hospital has approached the Calcutta High Court, challenging a lower court order that denied his lawyers permission to inspect the crime scene.

Demand For Independent Examination

In his petition, the father stated that he believes more than one person was present when the crime took place on August 9, 2024. While Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer with the city police, has been convicted and sentenced to imprisonment for the remainder of his natural life, the petitioner insists that others may also have been involved.

The petitioner argued that an independent examination of the place of occurrence is essential to help the court detect any lapses in the investigation. He requested that his lawyer, Phiroze Edulji, along with six junior advocates, be granted access to the crime scene for two hours to carry out the inspection.

This plea seeks to overturn a July 9 order by a Sealdah court, which refused permission for the legal team to visit the hospital’s seminar room — the location where the victim’s body was discovered.

Case Background

The on-duty doctor was found dead inside the seminar room of the state-run R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in north Kolkata on August 9 last year. The brutal crime sparked widespread protests and outrage across the country, drawing national attention to safety concerns for healthcare workers.

Following the investigation, the Sealdah sessions court convicted Sanjay Roy of rape and murder, handing him the maximum sentence — imprisonment till the end of his natural life.

The matter is expected to be listed for hearing before a single bench of the Calcutta High Court early next week, the petitioner’s counsel said. The court will decide whether the legal team can access the crime scene to conduct their own examination.
