Former Dutch international footballer Quincy Promes was sentenced to 18 months in jail by a Dutch court on June 19. He was found guilty of stabbing his cousin during a family party. Promes, who currently plays for Spartak Moscow, had pleaded not guilty to the charges. However, he was not present in the Amsterdam court for the sentencing as he resides in Russia.
The court determined that Promes had stabbed his cousin in the leg during a family birthday celebration in 2020 following a dispute over a stolen necklace. Normally, such an offense would carry a minimum sentence of one year. However, due to Promes’ public profile as a professional football player and well-known figure in the Netherlands, the court imposed a more severe sentence.
In a statement, the court explained “The court took into account that the suspect is a professional football player and well-known Dutchman, and therefore has an exemplary function. The court also blames the suspect for not taking any responsibility for his act.”
Prosecutors initially dropped a charge of attempted murder against Quincy Promes, and they had sought a two-year sentence for him. The investigation into Promes was initiated based on a phone tap related to a separate drug-smuggling case in which he was involved.
In May, Promes was charged with importing several hundred kilos of cocaine through the Belgian port of Antwerp in 2020. Promes, who has represented the Netherlands national team 50 times and scored seven goals, last appeared for the national team during the Euro 2020 Championships held in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Promes joined Amsterdam’s Ajax in 2019 from Sevilla in a transfer worth €15 million ($16.4 million). However, he returned to the Russian football club Spartak in 2021, where he had previously been named Russia’s “Footballer of the Year” in 2017.
