Escaped Alabama Prisoner Assisted By Jailer Receives Life Sentence

An Alabama prisoner who escaped with the help of a jailer has been recently sentenced to life in prison. In court, the prisoner expressed their desire for a fresh start, stating, “We wanted a new life…”

At the time of his escape in April 2022, White was serving a 75-year prison term for various charges dating back to 2015, including attempted murder. Additionally, he was awaiting a capital murder trial.

In a courtroom in Lauderdale County, Alabama, Casey White, an escaped prisoner, was sentenced to life imprisonment on Thursday. White had escaped with the assistance of a corrections officer, Vicky White, who tragically took her own life as authorities closed in on them after a manhunt spanning three states.

During the court proceedings, Casey White expressed that he felt like the most despised person in the world. However, he chose not to tarnish Vicky White’s name, stating that she was the first person who had shown care towards him in six years, despite not being related. He apologized for the escape and acknowledged that Vicky White’s sole regret was leaving her family behind.

Casey White admitted to desiring a fresh start together, emphasizing that Vicky White knew the truth about him. He accepted responsibility for his actions and the consequences, recognizing that his choices had cost him his life and freedom. White said, “We just wanted a new life together because she knew the truth. I can handle the truth because I know who I am,” White said. “I chose this road. It’s cost me my life and freedom.”

Prior to the escape in April 2022, Casey White was serving a 75-year prison sentence for various charges dating back to 2015, which included attempted murder. Additionally, he was awaiting a capital murder trial. The escape lasted 11 days until Casey White was apprehended in Evansville, Indiana, while Vicky White tragically ended her own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

In exchange for pleading guilty to escape, prosecutors dropped a felony murder charge related to Vicky White’s death. Casey White agreed to the maximum sentence of life without the possibility of parole.

The court also instructed him to inform the state if he, his family, or his attorneys receive any financial opportunities such as book or movie deals associated with the escape. Any proceeds from such opportunities would be directed towards covering his legal defense expenses.

Furthermore, Casey White still faces a capital murder trial scheduled for August 14 for the 2015 killing of Connie Ridgeway in Rogersville, Alabama. The trial was delayed due to the escape incident and Casey White’s retention of a new legal team.
