Imran Khan Claims May 9 Riots Case Is Part of Political Vendetta

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has alleged that his nomination in the May 9, 2023, riots case is part of a politically motivated campaign designed to tarnish his image and weaken his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

Khan made the statement during a hearing at the Lahore High Court, where a bench comprising Justices Syed Shahbaz Ali Rizvi and Tariq Saleem Sheikh heard his bail pleas in connection with 8 different cases.

These include charges related to the attack on the Corps Commander House in Lahore, one of the incidents that took place amid widespread protests following Khan’s arrest last year.

Khan Denies Role In Violence

The former Prime Minister told the court that he was in the custody of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) at the time the protests and violence occurred, arguing that the cases against him are baseless and politically driven.

“This is not justice, it is a vendetta,” Khan said. “I was under arrest. How could I have led or incited any violence?”

Background

The May 9 riots erupted after Khan was arrested on corruption charges, sparking protests across the country. Some of these demonstrations turned violent, with attacks on military buildings and government offices. Authorities blamed PTI supporters for the unrest and arrested thousands. Several individuals, including Khan, now face charges under anti-terrorism laws and could face life imprisonment.

Controversy Over Legal Proceedings

The Lahore High Court has yet to issue a verdict on Khan’s bail. The senior politician’s legal team has argued that the ongoing cases are part of a broader plan to sideline political opposition. Human rights groups have also expressed concern over the use of military courts to try civilians involved in the protests.

In addition, the Supreme Court of Pakistan had earlier questioned the speed at which the designation process and legal action were carried out, hinting at procedural irregularities.
