Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s nephew Hassaan Khan Niazi has been recently handed over to the military for trial concerning his alleged involvement in the violence that occurred on May 9.
Hassan has been named as the primary suspect in the attack on Jinnah House, which transpired in Lahore during the attack of May 9. These events were triggered following the arrest of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf chief.
The report further states that Hassaan was apprehended by the police in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and subsequently handed over to the military at the request of the commanding officer.
Hassaan Niazi, who also serves as the party chief’s focal person on legal matters, was handed to Quetta police custody on August, the day after his late-night arrest in Abbottabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The development was confirmed by his father Hafeezullah Khan on his social media account.
However, the case in which Hassaan was apprehended was remained unknown.
Earlier, the police indicated that Hassaan was implicated in the May 9 riots and the attack on sensitive military installations. It added that, . “Niazi is wanted by the Lahore police for his involvement in the attack on Jinnah House (Lahore’s Corps Commander House).”
Hassaan’s father filed a plea for his son’s release, seeking that he be presented before the court.
During the court proceedings, Additional Advocate General Ghulam Sarwar Nahang submitted the police report to Justice Sultan Tanveer Ahmed of the High Court.
Nahang informed the court about Hassaan’s military trial and his transfer to army custody. He also requested that a meeting be arranged between Hassaan and his parents. In response, the court directed the law officer to notify them when the meeting could be scheduled.
Nahang replied after the court granted adjournment to clarify the procedures and rules, “I can find out the procedures and rules in this regard, and inform accordingly.”
Meanwhile, the former prime minister, who has been ousted, is currently incarcerated at Attock Jail. This follows his conviction by an Islamabad trial court for concealing the proceeds of Toshakhana (state depository) gifts received from foreign dignitaries during his tenure as the prime minister from 2018 to 2022.
He was sentenced to 3 years in prison and fined PKR 1,00,000.
Consequently, the Election Commission of Pakistan imposed a 5-year disqualification from holding public office in the wake of his conviction.”
