Pak SC To Hear Musharraf’s 2013 Poll Plea, 5 Months After His Death

The Supreme Court of Pakistan will hear the appeal of the late Pervez Musharraf against the rejection of his nomination papers for a National Assembly seat, five months after his death.

The top court has fixed July 17, 2023, for hearing the plea he filed against the rejection of his nomination papers for a National Assembly seat of Kasur in the 2013 general elections.

The case will be conducted by a three-judge panel comprising Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Ayesha A. Malik, and Justice Hassan Azhar Rizvi.

The Election Commission of Pakistan’s returning officer rejected Musharraf’s nomination papers for the NA-139 constituency in Kasur after objections were raised by his opponent, Advocate Javed Kasuri, on 6 different grounds.

The objections were based on the requirements outlined in Articles 62 & 63 of the Constitution, which address the qualifications and disqualifications of National Assembly members.

The returning officer deemed Musharraf ineligible to contest the NA-139 seat.

Furthermore, due to multiple court charges related to constitutional violations, the Election Commission of Pakistan disqualified him from participating in the Kasur elections.
