Despite various measures and directives from the top court of the country, Delhi continues to grapple with hazardous air quality.
Legal experts have voiced their concerns over the alarming situation, emphasizing the urgent need for sticker enforcement of laws.
Speaking to iTV Network, Supreme Court Senior Advocate Geeta Luthra said: “It is shocking that what legacy we are leaving to our future generations and to our present generation.”
She lamented that Delhi is extremely unsafe to live in, and that the right to life conflates with right to livelihood otherwise most of us would not to continue to live in gas chamber like Delhi.
Ms. Luthra said: “Keeping in mind the government offices, the jobs, schools of our kids etc. in Delhi we are forced to live in this gas chamber.”
She said, “The right to life is an important right which a state has completely forgotten because one of the aspects of right to life is right to clean air.”
Ms. Luthra noted that It is not the job of courts to monitor such things; it is the most fundamental duty of the state to ensure compliance.
Justice Ravindra Singh, Supreme Court Senior Advocate and former judge of the Allahabad High Court commenting of this situation said that it is unfortunate that despite so many orders of the Supreme Court, the compliance has not been ensured.
Justice Ravindra Singh recounted his personal experience said that he travels daily from Noida to Supreme Court in Delhi and observes numerically BS4 and older vehicles on the roads, yet there is no one inspecting or monitoring them.
He criticized governments for failing to adequately implement the Supreme Court’s directives.
He said: “If GRAP-4 is not implemented effectively, it will disrupt everyday life, leading to illness and other severe consequences.”
The question remains: How long will it take for policy to translate into action? For Delhi’s citizens, time is running out!
