The Delhi High Court on Wednesday has declined to entertain an intervention application related to recent stampede that occurred at New Delhi Railway Station, which resulted in the deaths of 18 people.

The High Court bench of Chief Justice DK Upadhyay and Justice Tushar Rao Gendela disposed of the plea noting that the scope of the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) is restricted to matters concerning the Railway Act, and the petition filed does not fall under that category.

The petition, filed by some passengers who were affected by the incident, sought answers regarding ticket refunds and the management of crowds at the station.

The passengers complained that they were not refunded the money for their tickets after their train departed on the day of the stampede.

In the last hearing, the HC raised questioned crowd control and ticket sales. It questioned why more tickets were sold for a coach than it could accommodate.

March 4: The Ministry of Railways replaced the top railway officer of the Delhi division.

February 15: The stampede occurred at New Delhi Railway station when passengers rushed to board trains headed for Prayagraj, resulting in the loss of 18 lives.
