A Singapore court recently sentenced an Indian-origin man to prison after he hit his girlfriend with an iron cage during an argument over their pet dog.
Vishneshwaran Jagadeesan (42), was in a live-in-relationship with his girlfriend Lakshmi Karthiga Subramaniam (39).
The couple’s relationship has been strained for some time. They had a disagreement one day about how to raise a pet dog. What began as a verbal argument gradually escalated, and Vishneshwaran threw a 1 kg iron cage on Lakshmi. She was injured in the incident and she filed a case at the local police station.
Vishneshwaran was convicted and sentenced to one month in prison by a Singapore court. The court found him guilty of acting without regard for the safety of others and issuing threats.
Previously, when Lakshmi accused Vishneshwaran of theft, he threatened to break her face in front of the police.
Vishneshwaran’s counsel stated in court that the couple’s relationship has been strained for some time and that they used to fight frequently. The lawyer requested the court to recognise the two’s fragile relationship and conclude the case by imposing a fine on Vishneshwaran.
However, after hearing both sides’ arguments, the judge concluded that the violence faced by Lakshmi does not deserve mercy. The court stated that pardoning the accused solely because of their relationship would be a violation of the law, and they announced his sentence.
Endangering human life and behaving rashly or recklessly, according to Singapore law, can result in a fine of up to Rs 1.5 lakh or a six-month jail sentence, or both. At the same time, anyone found guilty of causing grave harm or criminal intimidation face up to ten years in prison, a fine, or both.
